Surface Area and Dissolving Rate

Last week we experimented to see which would dissolve faster: sugar cubes, or loose granulated sugar.

Scientists, share your results with the class. Please answer these questions:

-Which dissolved more quickly?
-Why do you think one dissolved more quickly than the other?
-Read through the other comments. Did every group get the same results? Why or why not?

Extra Credit:
-How could you use what you learned in this experiment in other parts of your life or other areas of science?

  1. For my group, the loose sugar dissolved more quickly. I think it dissolved more quickly because all of the sugar was touching the water right from the beginning. In the sugar cube, the sugar inside the cube didn't touch the water at first.

Maybe if I ever need medicine that needs to work in my body fast, I could ask for powder instead of a pill, because it would dissolve faster.

  2. In my group our results were that sandy sugar dissolved faster than the sugar cube. I think the sandy sugar has freedom and it can dissolve faster because it has small grains and the grains are free to move around in the water. I see that Mrs. Lee got the same results. That makes sense because she and I used the same materials.

If I was hungry and I couldn't swallow big things well, then I could have grains of food, because then it would dissolve faster and then I wouldn't be hungry anymore.

  4. For me and my group, The loose sugar disolved more quickly. I think that happend because the loose sugar could start disolving but the cubed sugar had to break down and then disolve.

  5. I think the suger will dissolve more faster.I think the suger will, because the suger cube is more bigger.Mrs.lee said too, because mrs.lee said the suger cube, the suger inside it did not touch the water at first.

  6. In my group the loose sugar dissolves more quickly. Because it takes a while for the sugar cube to dissoive because the sugar on the inside is locked in by the other sugar.
    The other groups probrably did.

  7. For my group I also think the loose surger would disolve more quickely and it did. Because it was loose so it will evaprate more faster

  10. My group's sugar cube dissolve faster than the powdered sugar. I think that the sugar cube dissolved faster because we may have stired to fast. One group's sugar cube dissolved faster then the powdered sugar beacase they stired way to fast

  11. My group saw that the powdered sugar dissolved way faster than the sugar cube. Probably because the sugar cube is a bigger solid and it had to break before it was the same as the powdered sugar. Not every group got the same answer because some people stirred faster for the sugar cube, so it seemed like it dissolved faster.

  13. for my group the granulated sugar disolved faster than the cubed sugar cause the cubed sugar had the sugar inside were the water couldn't reach it and the water could reach the granulated sugar.

  14. In my group, the loose sugar dissolved more quickly. I think it dissolved more quickly because sugar cube is a solid cube so if you were stirring the sugar cube which is in the water you can see that sugar cube doesn't become sperated but loose sugar is allready seperated so loose sugar sugar thakes less time to dissove.

  18. In my group loose sugar dissolved faster because cube sugar had to become loose. But loose sugar did not need to do that.

  19. In my group, the loose sugar dissolved faster.I think it dissolved more quickly because the sugar cube is harder on the outside. The other groups mostly had the same answers because they were using the same matirials.

  20. Not everyone got the same results. Even though I would expect the loose sugar to disolve faster it just dipends. That's why some peopie have different answers.

  21. My table group saw that the sugar cub dissolved faster. I think the sugar cub dossolved faster because the mixer mixed harder than the loose sugar. I don't think he ment to.

  22. In my group the lose suger dissolved faster.
I think the lose suger dissolved faster because the lose suger is more spred apart than the suger cube. Both sugers did not get the same times because differant groups stured differently

  23. My group found that the loose suger dissolved faster than the suger cube because the suger was all ready broken a part and does not have to brake a way from each other. The other groups had the same answer decause they probably stired the same speed.

  25. Almost every group said loose sugar dissolved more faster but some of the group said sugar cube did faster. I think why they said sugar cube dissoved faster is because I think they stirr it faster thanmost of the groups.

  26. The loose sugar dissolved faster.Beacause it was smaller.I think it dissolved faster beacause it was a small partical.

The sugar cube was bigger and dissolved slower.I think it dissolved slower beacause it was a bigger partical.

In my group for medicane I would have taken the pill but it would dissolve slower. But if I took the powder it would dissolve faster.

  28. In the green table group the suger cube
dissolved faster than the loose suger.
I think the stirrer, stirred with the pencil and he kept hitting the suger cube when
he stirred. The sugar then broke down and dissolved. It did not match the others
    comments.

  29. In my group loose sugar dissolved faster because cube sugar had to become loose. But loose sugar did not need to do that.

some one said that the cube dissolved faster because they thought the cube evaoprated in water.
